Effect of Word Puzzle Game-Based Learning Application on Junior Secondary Students’ Performance and Motivation in English Spellings in Ilorin, Nigeria.

Word puzzle game-based learning application is the use of game elements as a technological intervention to support students’ English spellings, foster active participation, enhance motivation and academic performance. However, the adoption of game-based learning applications in English remain limited, even as the traditional approach continues to limit students’ spelling ability, motivation and overall academic performance. Therefore, this study, examined the effect of word puzzle game-based learning application on junior secondary students’ performance and motivation in English spellings in Ilorin, Nigeria.
The study adopted a quasi-experimental design, a target population of junior secondary school students’ in Ilorin, Nigeria were purposively selected in an intact class, pre-tested using paper cross word puzzle game and then post-tested with the adopted word puzzle game-based learning application, as a technology intervention to determine its effect on students’ English spellings. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Frequency, Percentage, Mean and Standard Deviation was used to answer research questions, ANCOVA was used to test research hypothesis one, while t-test was used to test research hypotheses two and three at 0.05 significant level.
Results:
i. Game-based application was effective for enhancing students’ English spelling skills.
ii. Students’ were highly motivated towards the use of game-based application.
The study concluded that word puzzle game-based learning application was effective in enhancing students’ performance and motivation in English spellings. The study recommended that educators should integrate game-based applications to complement traditional approach in English language.
